Nanofactory final product In 2005 and 2006, I worked with Dr. Eric Drexler to design and animate his nanofactory. The purpose was to produce a communication tool as well as to explore designs for such a machine. Dr. Drexler had written a thick book on the technical details for the device, but no one had produced CAD drawings, decided on the basic layout, or designed the simple mechanical side of this production environment. About four months into the project I suggested using an extruder output stage and Dr. Drexler accepted that change because it seemed easier to explain than the previous design. Of course, after suggesting such a thing, I had to design it from scratch.

I decided one day in 2003 to build a 3D model of the Wright Brother's Flyer - the first powered airplane. It was a matter of personal fascination. In the search for plans and drawings, I discovered that the 100th anniversary of their flight was coming on Dec 17th of that year. It was a race to complete the model before that date. I made it with a few days to spare.

A year or two later I was able to go to the Smithsonian Museum and see the rebuilt model of the real one. They also had 3d movies of the same flight. I'll let you be the judge of which is better. Their's had grass showing on the sand. Funny, only thing I remember from that visit. Copyright (c) 2007 John Burch.
